Several users on X, platform formerly known as Twitter, claimed Middleton’s cancer was a result of the coronavirus vaccine. Most of these people were anti-vaxxers.
“Many people are speculating that the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton may have gotten cancer from the vaccine. The Queen was also vaccinated and King Charles, who is battling cancer as well,” one person said.
Some supported Middleton as claims about the vaccination connection were made.
“The anti-vaxxers have found Kate Middleton and are claiming the Princess’s cancer is the conspiracy invention, “turbo cancer” they claim is caused by the vaccine. Except it’s not real. These people are legit monsters,” one tweet read.
Elon Musk-led X was quick to fact-check the false claims. “There is no evidence showing any link between the COVID-19 vaccines and cancer,” it said, linking articles from Reuters, USA Today and AFP.
Do COVID-19 vaccines cause cancer?
Experts have clarified such reports, saying there is no evidence that COVID-19 vaccines cause cancer or are associated with a greater risk of developing cancer.
A senior policy analyst with the Canadian Cancer Society told CTV news that: “Misinformation can increase vaccine hesitancy and can delay the provision of health care.”
Reuters quoted Dr. Gigi Gronvall, immunology expert and senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, as saying: “There is zero basis for any of the things being claimed here. They are completely made up and none of it is true”.
Middleton had taken her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in 2021.
